OUR INGREDIENT PHILOSOPHY

We like you, and we also like our planet. That’s why we only use clean ingredients that have proven safety and eco-friendly profiles. While we prefer to focus on all the brilliant ingredients in our products, we think it’s important to point out the things we refuse to use because they may not be the best for our health and our Earth. We promise that our bars will always be free from sulfates, palm oil, silicones, parabens, phthalates, mineral oils or petrochemicals, and synthetic fragrances. Additionally, our products are soap-free because soap-based products are not pH-balanced for your hair and scalp and can damage certain hair types.

Why Do Some Of Our Ingredients Still Sound Scary?

Our products only contain ingredients that come from nature. That doesn’t mean that we’ve plucked a coconut off a tree and put it directly into our bar. In order for some ingredients to have certain functions, they need to go through some level of chemical processing to make them have the effect they need to. The cleaning and conditioning agents are the biggies. A good example is one of our main cleansing agents, sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI). It sounds scary, but it’s not. It comes from coconuts! But, in order for it to be a super awesome cleanser to remove dirt and build-up from your hair without stripping the good stuff, the raw coconut material is put through a chemical process to turn it into a cleanser that is safe and effective. All of our cleansers (which unfortunately have very chemical-y sounding names) are derived from coconuts or apples.

Another scary sounding ingredient, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, comes from the guar, or cluster bean, plant. This ingredient packs a double punch. The gum extracted from the plant goes through a chemical process that adds a positive charge to it. This makes it stick to our negatively charged hair, which smoothes, reduces fly-aways, and adds slip to the hair. A natural conditioner! As a bonus, it also helps our bars stick together to withstand normal use, so they don’t become a big, crumbly mess in your shower.

We also know that scents, even if they come from natural fruit extracts or essential oils, can cause skin or scalp sensitivity in some people. We’ve created our bars in both scented and unscented options so you can choose the best product for you. We will always let you know if a product contains known allergens, so you can feel safe and secure using our products.

How Is SCI Different From An Ingredient Like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)?

Some companies are starting to move away from SLS or sulfates in general, and for good reason. SLS has a low molecular weight which can penetrate easily into the structure of the hair and can break some of the hair’s internal bonds, which ultimately weakens the hair. We pledge not to use SLS or other sulfates, because we think there are safer and healthier alternatives for your hair and scalp. While more costly than SLS, the cleansing agents that we’ve chosen are ultimately better for your hair, which is at the heart of our company’s Root Values.

Our company will never put you or our planet at risk by including something that might be harmful. Our commitment to human and planetary health was born from our founder’s background and experience in physiology, toxicology, and environmental health. We’ve looked at the safety profile and available toxicological and clinical research for each and every ingredient in our products and we know that they are safe for you.
