On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighboring country of Ukraine. If you’ve been following the news, you know that major attacks have been reported across Ukraine, spreading fear and panic and causing an unknown number of deaths – both military and civilian alike.
With this humanitarian crisis unfolding, Solid Roots has contributed its Root Cause of the Quarter donations for Q1 to support efforts in Ukraine. In lieu of our regularly scheduled voting by you, one percent of total sales from January to March 2022 was donated to Heart to Heart International (HHI). HHI looks to improve healthcare globally by ensuring quality care is provided equitably in medically under-resourced communities and in disaster situations, and the Ukraine crisis is no exception. HHI does this all with very low overhead – 99.5% of funds goes directly to their programs.
In Ukraine, significant infrastructural damage has left an untold number of people without electricity or water, while bridges and roads damaged by shelling have left communities cut off from markets for food and other basic supplies. The most pressing humanitarian needs are emergency medical services, critical medicines, health supplies and equipment, safe water for drinking and hygiene, and shelter and protection for those displaced from their homes.
According to the most recent update on their website posted April 1, HHI is continuing to work with partners throughout Europe and the U.S. to get supplies into Ukraine. They’re focusing on both medical aid and hygiene kit shipments. So far, they’ve delivered 152 pallets of medicines and medical supplies to hospitals and clinics throughout Ukraine. They’ve also delivered 36,600 hygiene kits to countries surrounding Ukraine to aid Ukrainian refugees flooding into those countries.
Solid Roots is happy to be doing something to help this horrible situation that is unfolding, but our hearts are heavy as we follow the news of what’s happening. Our thoughts are with those suffering, those who have lost loved ones, and those who have lost their lives. We’ll be back with our regularly scheduled voting for the Root Cause next quarter.
